S&DJR LINKS

  • The S&DJR E-list
Independent SDJR news group run by the webmaster of  this site.

  • Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) Publications
The primary objective of this site is to list every book, video, DVD and audio cassette that has significant S&DJR content

  • Britain's Lost Railways E-list
A news group dedicated to railways no more

  • The Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust is dedicated to all matters relating to the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and its associated undertakings. As well as collating information about the history of the line, the Trust is very active in keeping the spirit of the S&D alive with its extensive Museum and facilities at Washford on the West Somerset Railway.

  • The Shillingstone Station Project
An exciting new group The Shillingstone Station Project aims to restore the station and available surrounding area to how it was in the early 1960s by: Renovating the station buildings to include a small museum. Repairing the platforms and fencing. Rebuilding the signal box, wooden shelter and outbuildings. Recreating the station gardens.

  • The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust Official Site / Midsomer Norton Station Project
" Dedicated to the preservation of SDJR artefacts including the former trackbed and associated structures. The major project so far is the planned re-opening of Midsomer Norton Station as a steam centre with museum. We have recently obtained a generous grant and plan to relay more track"

A superb photographic portrayal of the Somerset & Dorset Line in its final few years with images taken mainly on 'the Branch'.

  • Virtual Journey On the S&D
Richard Scott using some clever software is striving to recreate  a virtual journey along the S&D. The BVE route recreates Shillingstone to Sturminster Newton part of the line in North Dorset, about 3 miles in all. It is a part of the line that receives little coverage in books and videos, as most concentrate on the Somerset end of the line.

  • Virtual Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway
"This site provides information about my efforts to model the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway in Microsoft Train Simulator. As a first stage in achieving this, I am working recreating the branch line from Swanage to Bournemouth.A secondary objective is the creation of representative locomotives and stock to run on the line. My chosen time period is the late nineteen-fifties and early nineteen sixties".

  • Redditch Model Railway Club
Chilcompton is the latest of a number of Somerset & Dorset based exhibition layouts and is currently under construction. It is based on the prototype station of the same name. The layout made its exhibition debut at the Biggleswade show in February 2002. The era is set sometime between 1950 and 1955 and all the stock used represents what would have actually run over the real line, at this time.

  • The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway - Searching for a lost line
Gordon Jones is slowly expanding his interesting website with recent pictures of our favourite line as it appears now. Each time I dial in I find something new - well worth a look!

  • Kevin's Place - The Somerset & Dorset Railway
Kevin Clapcott has probably created the leading and most comprehensive Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway website. The pages feature more or less everything you would ever wish to know about this great railway.

  • Semaphore Online
Not strictly S&D, the site features news, reports and photographs of progress being made on the Avon Valley Railway. It also features articles, photographs and other information (such as timetables and track layouts) on the former Midland Railway Mangotsfield to Bath branch.

  • West Country Railway Archives
Detailed historical information about the railways of the UK West Country. This comprehensive website includes a detailed section dedicated S&DJR signalling.

  • The West Somerset Railway on the Web - unofficial site
The West Somerset Railway (Home of the S&DRT) recaptures the era of the branch line country railway in the days of steam. Enjoy 20 miles of glorious Somerset scenery as the train gently rolls back the years on its journey beside the Quantock Hills and the Bristol Channel coast. Just sit back in your seat and watch the steam and countryside drift past the window...

  • The Somerset & Dorset After Closure
A site mainly displaying previously unpublished material taken at various key locations on the S&D during the early seventies when much of the infrastructure was still standing. New more recent images are also appearing from time to time.

  • Lantern Films
A well known film company producing a number of transport orientated videos. On their web site they have still pictures from a trip made over the Somerset & Dorset between Bath and Evercreech Junction in the final years. Lantern Films also produce the highly acclaimed S&D film 'Puffed Out'.

  • South Hants Model Railway Club - Midsomer Norton
An excellent working representation of Midsomer Norton & Welton station as it would have appeared in 1919. It is modelled in 4mm/ft scale 18.83 gauge (Scalefour)

  • Gartell Light Railway
2-foot gauge railway running on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, south of Templecombe. The only steam still running on the trackbed of the old S&DJR. The website features pictures and information about when the line is open to the public.

  • The Combwich Branch
This 4mm scale model railway represents part of a great plan to link the up and coming north Somerset town sited on the river Parrett with Highbridge, Bridgwater and locations further afield by connecting onto the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and the Great Western Railway.

  • Wurzel Junction
A Somerset & Dorset Model Railway in 00 with DCC control. "Wurzel Junction was located at the Junction of the North Somerset and Somerset and Dorset Railways. Deep in the Somerset coal fields, the North Somerset provided an alternative route to Bristol and the North. Reduced congestion on the single track section of the S&D increased the importance of Wurzel Junction. The motive power depot became a vital engine change over point, and a wide variety of motive power was frequently seen. The town developed around coal, and Somerset's finest scrumpy, "Wurzel Juice". "

  • The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Webring
An idea I have to link as many S&D websites together. Going to this one site will take you to most of the sites that feature in these jottings
    .
