Metalwork by A359. Not
sure what this is really! Located
at the immediate southern end of the gap where the line passed over the
A359 south of Bruton.Too
flimsy to have been a signal post, it might be the base of a warning
sign? An old photo from the area will show it up no doubt!

Update 29/07/02 by Craig Phillips.
Your photo showing two metal diamond
shapes of metal near to the A359 is likely to be one of two things.
It could be the point of join for the
roller wheel or pullies that would of taken the wires to the signals
or it could be the pullies that would of taken the wires to the gate
locking system for a level crossing. However, if these metal objects
are set tight by the road then it is more likely to be the bolt
holding position for the drop hinge to hold the crossing gates across
the line. I can remember seeing something like these at only two other
places. 1. Mount Pleasant Level Crossing, Northam. 2. The disused
level crossing at Motisfont on the line to Andover.
Or . . . .
Update 12/12/02 by Stephen Dadd. The picture of unknown metal work around Bruton look like what were affectionatly known as monuments. These were placed either in the 4 foot or alongside in the cess to help gauge alignment. If the concrete is just a solid block, I'm wrong, but if they are scolloped on their four sides then that is what they are.
